Special to the Express
Dozens of hunters and interested people came to the Girouxville Inn on Dec. 5 to view and exchange stories on hunting experiences this past fall.
About two dozen entries in four different categories of wildlife made the evening enjoyable for all people present.
The largest trophy was harvested by Donovan Dumont in the Typical Mule Deer category. His animal’s antlers scored 190 7/8 by Boone and Crockett standards. It was a trophy still largely in velvet and was symmetrical and well balanced. He harvested the animal only a couple days after the rifle season opened. This animal was seen as the largest because even though animals in other categories had more Boone and Crockett points, the mule deer score represented an exceptional animal in that category.
Second place in the mule deer category went to Austin Hartman while Marc Turcotte placed third. Fourth and fifth places were awarded to Mike Chabot and Kelvin Wright, all with deer measuring over the 150 point level.
Largest moose award went to Lucien Nolette with a measurement of 135 3/8. Philippe Gosselin garnered second place in the category with Lorraine Plowman being awarded third place recognition.
The Whitetail deer division was won by Gary Braithwaite whose entry measured 149 3/8. Bill Plamondon, Mark Lamothe, Philippe Gosselin, and Shane Bouvier were ranked second through fifth.
The Elk division had five entries ranging in size from 288 5/8 to 211 7/8, all respectable antlers. Kelvin Wright harvested the largest animal while Daryl Hartman, Danny Therrien, Randy Skrepnek and Marc Turcotte ranked second through fifth respectively.
The measurements for the evening were expertly done by Andy Trudeau of Tru Taxidermy with able assistance from his brothers Norm and Ron. Numerous prizes went to the entry winners. Though a crisp, cool evening, the warm atmosphere surrounding the hunting stories and measurements proved entertaining and interesting. Considerable discussion surrounded the fact that the past two winters have been severe and impacted the number of animals out in the field this year.
