Finally, the last two weeks of 2009

Emily Plihal
for Smoky River Express

Is anyone else thankful this year is almost done?

This has definitely been a speedy year, the first time I’ve actually understood older generations when they say, “Just wait until you get older, the time just flies.”

Well, to all the wise souls that told me that as a child, you’re right!

It could be the sometime 20 hour days I’ve worked this year, but I honestly just think time is starting to speed by.

Each year, I try to avoid making New Year’s resolutions... however; this year I’m going to make a list of things I’d like to see happen or goals I’d like to achieve.

First and foremost, I’d like to see my friend who lost his baby two weeks ago have some finality to her death. I hope the people who are responsible have to pay by an extended long-term sentence in the penitentiary.

I wish continued success to FCSS (Family and Community Support Services). Penny, Jean and Isabelle are quite likely the three nicest people in our region, dedicated to making others’ lives more enjoyable. For all the time you ladies put into organizing events, food hampers, and just aiding people by listening and finding solutions... you deserve a special place in Heaven. Kudos to you!

Our local community members all deserve a pat on the back this holiday season. I am thoroughly impressed every time I go to a fundraiser and see the support the organization has received. Whether monetary, spiritual or volunteered time, our local towns are truly inspirational. When I look at many community members in McLennan, Donnelly, Guy, Jean Cote, Falher and Girouxville (not to forget all the farm families in between), I see the type of person I aspire to become. Thank you for being such great role models for our children.

On a more personal note, thank you all for being so patient while I worked out the glitches of being a new editor.

This year has definitely been a challenge, going from a fourth year reporter to jumping into Kevin’s very large shoes.

It definitely has been a year to remember. The first few months saw me sitting in the Express office until midnight or later, as I tried to pump out 24–28 page papers. This may not seem like a lot, however; when working on layout alone... especially as a relative rookie, it is definitely time consuming.

Next year I hope to spend more time with my gorgeous nieces and nephews, who last weekend clung to me as if I’d never come back. Unfortunately it had been about eight months since they’d seen me last. They are the most precious beings in my life, and I thank them for being so loving and supportive. Auntie loves you!

I must congratulate my sister Katia, who has made our whole family very proud. Katia struggled after losing her husband nearly five years ago, but has courageously battled through those emotions and fears.

My sister went through the four-year nursing program at University of Alberta/ Grant MacEwan, and has successfully earned a degree in nursing. She completed the RN program in just three and a half years, earning her degree last week. Congratulations!

For all of you in our community, I wish you a safe and happy holiday season. May your family enjoy time with one another, laughter and all the love the season should bring.

Please remember this holiday season, do not drink and drive!
