Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) would like to extend a warm thank you to all those who were able to donate this year to the Christmas Hamper program.
Donations have been collected throughout the Smoky River Region for the past couple of months, and after tallying up the donations, FCSS event coordinator Jean Moore thinks the numbers have been reduced a fraction.
“We are down about 20 per cent in food and gifts from last year,” says Moore, who explains the lagging economy has a large impact on what people donate. She says many people are unsure if they’ll have a job in the morning so they are likely being more careful with their money. “I’m betting we are down about 20 per cent on cash donations as well, based on the last three years.”
Moore explains 104 hampers will be distributed to families from across the region this year. As of press time, FCSS and École Héritage were just beginning to assemble the hampers.
“It always shocks me as to how generous people are in this community,” says Moore.
“I’ve never lived in an area that is so generous before this. Even in difficult times, people still want to help our those who are in need.”
Moore explains cash donations through the years have enabled FCSS to ensure they have enough food and gifts for each Christmas hamper.
Each hamper is designed specially for the family that will be receiving it. Number of children and adults in the home is taken into consideration.
The food bank is a year round project designed to make the lives of those less fortunate more comfortable. If you’d like to donate, please phone the FCSS office at 780-837-2220.
