With Christmas wind breathing down their necks, the Falher Pirates welcomed the High Prairie Regals to their pond on Dec. 12, hoping to make the reception a chilly one.

Unfortunately, the Pirates were less than thrilled when after 60 minutes of play, the Pirates left the Falher rink with smiles and a gift of a win, rather than the requested upset.

Pirates opened up the scoring at 15:57 of the first with a goal by Josh Fletcher, assisted by Pirates captain Jason Bouchard.

Shots on goal in the first were dominated by the Pirates in a 16 to 4 margin.

Second period action heated up at 13:52, when Pirates forward Tim Clayton lit the goal lamp, assisted by Bouchard.

High Prairie was looking to tie up the game, with two consecutive power play goals at 18:13 and 19:59 of the second.

Goals were scored by Rollie Gladue and Tim Cunningham, assisted by Kelly Cunningham (2) and Lawrence Anderson (2).

Shots on net were closer in the second, with the margin still going to the Pirates with 9 to 8 the final tally.

Third period action was in High Prairie’s favour, although being out-shot 14–9.

Pirates managed to score a short handed goal at 7:29 of the third. Goal was scored by Clayton, his second goal of the game, assisted by Ryan Hicks.

Falher showed no signs of backing down at 8:54 of the the third, with a tally scored by Denis Rochon, assisted by Shaun Hicks and Bouchard.

High Prairie came storming back with three goals in just under four minutes.

Goals were scored by L. Ah-Kim-Nachie (2) and Steven Thunder. Assists were earned by Craig VandeLigt, Eli Cunningham and Rollie Gladue.

Pirates capitalized on one power play opportunity out of seven, while High Prairie’s special teams were a fraction better scoring two out of six.
