Sports: Lakeland Eagles smoke Peace River Stampeders in overtime

Lakeland Eagles are feeling confident at the top of the East Division, confident they will make the NPHL playoffs in February.

They skated into the Peace River Stampeders pond on Jan. 14 with intentions of winning another game to solidify their top spot in the East Division.

Peace River opened the scoring at just 44 seconds even strength with a goal by Nick Laporte, assisted by Aaron Parenteau and Mitch Kohut.

Lakeland answered back at 4:25 with a goal by Darwin Payou, assisted by Jay Anderson and Dave Lamouche.

They opened up the scoring at 8 minutes with a goal by Chris Noskey, assisted by James Tallman and Joey Anderson.

Jay Anderson scored the Eagles’ third of the game at 10:36 assisted by Dave Lamouche and Jr. Anderson.

Peace River scored their final of the first at 11:28 by Kohut, assisted by Graham Campbell.

Jr. Anderson scored Lakeland’s final goal in the first at 16:50, assisted by Jay Anderson and Lamouche.

Second period action was kept to a minimum, with goals scored by Stamps’ Kohut, assisted by Laporte, and Lakeland’s Tyler Shantz at 13:02 assisted by Travis Cunningham.

Third period action was opened up by the Stamps at 1:34 by James Hogan, assisted by Terry Houlder and Chris Houlder.

Lakeland’s Shantz made it a 6–4 game at 3:50 assisted by Cunningham.

Peace River scored at 12:04, with a goal by Laporte assisted by Kohut and Parenteau.

Stamps’ final goal of the game was scored at 19:07 pushing the game to overtime. The goal was scored by Chris Houlder, assisted by Kohut and Laporte.

Overtime action was cut short when Shantz capitalized on a feed from Jr. Anderson and Logan Goodswimmer. Final score in overtime was 7–6 in favour of the Eagles.

Lakeland has officially solidified their spot at the top of the East Division after a loss was awarded to the Falher Pirates for the use of an illegal player.

Only four penalties were handed out through 60 minutes of play against Peace River. No power play goals were scored in the game.

Game winning goal was scored by Tyler Shantz in overtime.

Lakeland will face Fairview tonight in McLennan at 8:30 p.m. They will then play on Jan. 30 against Peace River at the Stamps rink. Their final game of the season will be played on Jan. 29 in High Prairie.
