Up Front: How much cleavage is too much?
Emily Plihal
for Smoky River Express
I was sent an anonymous letter from someone in our region requesting a story written on the lack of restraint waitresses show in the area when dressing for work.
Apparently the individual is disgusted with the amount of cleavage and other skin shown by young girls when they are working in family restaurants. The person even went as far to say they’ve stopped going to certain restaurants because they can’t believe the way waitresses dress.
The individual asked me to write a column based on what etiquette should be used when these individuals dress for work. All I can offer is personal limitations I used when working in family restaurants as a student.
First of all, it is generally the position of the owner or manager to talk to their girls about what is appropriate to wear to work. They set formal guidelines to follow, and if the server does not follow the rules they are sent home to change.
I would expect standard protocol would be to limit the length of the skirts/shorts worn by their employees, as well as tell them not to wear risque clothing. Generally speaking most public places I’ve worked said to wear your skirt/shorts knee level. If the girls put their arms down along their body, the piece of clothing should not be shorter than where their tips of their fingers rest. More often than not, the employer will say knee length clothing, which allows for no confusion.
As for the top, many places I have worked say no spaghetti-strap tops, no tube tops, and nothing that shows off extensive bust line.
In my opinion, those working in the service industry (especially family restaurants) should not be showing cleavage. The waistline in my eyes should also be covered.
The individual who wrote to me spoke of seeing the waitress’s thong at one local restaurant. Just walking down the street seeing someone’s underwear disgusts me. I really don’t need to see your butt-floss when you are serving my family and I supper.
So yes, I totally understand the reader’s concern when she wrote me the letter. I do not think it’s appropriate to see your body parts when you’re serving me supper. Please be sympathetic to each individual’s concerns when having supper in your establishment. Cover up, or you will lose customers. This is essentially what this person conveyed to me in his/her letter.
They will protect their children from whatever they can, and I would assume body parts exposed is a major concern.
Children are exposed to sexual connotations via the Internet and television, but their parents are able to limit what their children see. Unfortunately when waitresses/waiters are dressing inappropriately, they are unable to assume how you’ll be dressed prior to going into the establishment.
Show yourself and your customers respect by covering your body. Gratuities are not based on amount of cleavage you show, unless you work at a strip joint.
Wishes for trade deadline....
As all of you know I am a staunch Oilers fan, and as disheartened as I currently am with my team, I do have some requests for the trade deadline.
It is quite evident (as the Oilers currently sit second bottom in the league) that we will not make the playoffs. That’s fine, I’ve come to terms with the fact the Oilers are not playing their top game.
I am hopeful that a few changes are made prior to trade deadline. I really hope the Oilers can find a new home for forward Shawn Horcoff.
For the benefit of his career and the Oilers salary cap, it would be great to see him traded prior to March 3.
