Sports: Dawson Creek Canucks step on league-leading Eagles toes

League leading Lakeland Eagles visited the Dawson Creek Canucks’ rink on Jan. 16, with a mission to prove why they’re front runners in the NPHL (North Peace Hockey League)

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Canucks had a different plan as they welcomed the McLennan team into their rink.

The Eagles skated into Dawson Creek with a full line up, ready to attack the Canucks’ defence.

Dawson Creek came out swinging in the first period, drawing four penalties from the Eagles.

First goal of the period was scored just 48 seconds in the first when Kris Desjarlais capitalized on a set up by Dustin Kersey and Arlo Hadland.

The Canucks’ offense was on fire as Adam Loncan added an extra marker just one minute after Desjarlais. Assists were awarded to Hadland and Chris Stevens.

Jessie Atkinson would not allow the Eagles’ any opportunity as he added the third Canucks’ goal at 2:07. Assists on the even-strength goal were awarded to Stevens and Loncan.

The Canucks finally capitalized on a power play opportunity at 2:52, with a goal burned into the back of the Eagles’ net by Desjarlais for his second of the game. Assists were earned by Loncan and Kip Noble.

The second period was much the same, with Dawson Creek dominating the ice surface. Very little room was allowed for the Eagles’ offense as Canucks’ mission was clearly stated.

Desjarlais added his hat trick goal just 1:31 into the second period, with an assist by Josh Schellenberg.

Desjarlais capitalized on another opportunity at 8:31, making it 6–0 for Dawson Creek. Assists were awarded to Loncan and Cory Dostal.

Jeff Taylor scored his first of the game at 12:57, with assists to Desjarlais and Noble.

The Canucks scored on the power play at 13:30, with a marker by Stevens. His goal was assisted by Loncan and Hadland.

Showing their special teams were on cue, the Canucks capitalized on a short handed attempt by Taylor at 14:48, with an assist awarded to Desjarlais.

Kersey and his teammates pummelled Lakeland’s goalie, Cannon Cunningham, until he allowed another goal at 17:55. Lael Brewster picked up his first point of the game assisting on the goal.

Ryan Walker gave the Canucks a 11–0 lead going into the dressing room at the end of the second.

His goal was scored unassisted at 18:30 even strength.

Lakeland reminded the Canucks they were still in the game at the beginning of the third, scoring on the power play at 1:09 with a marker from Jay Anderson. Assists were awarded to Tyler Shantz and James Tallman on the goal.

Canucks’ Stevens did not allow his team to put their guard down, scoring at 2:56 assisted by Noble and Kersey.

Lakeland scored their final goal of the game at 3:09. Craig Anderson scored against Davin Bull, assisted by Tallman.

Canucks’ Kersey scored his second of the game at 11:12 of the third, with assists by Noble and Stevens.

The final goal of the game came at 15:16, with a goal by Stevens for his 5th point of the game. The assist was earned by Loncan.

Final score of the game was 14–2 in favour of the Dawson Creek Canucks, who sit in first place in the West.
