The league leading Lakeland Eagles have solidified their spot at the top of the East Division, securing home ice advantage going into the playoffs this week.
They laced their skates to compete against the east division’s third place team the Fairview Kings on Jan. 28 in McLennan.
As of press time it was unsure which of three teams the Eagles would face off against in the playoffs, however; their focus was to ensure Fairview would not crawl any higher in the East division.
Fairview had a different idea as they focused on securing their third place in the east. They started out of the gates quickly with a goal by Michel Landry at 34 seconds into the first period. Trevor Morrow fed Landry the pass for an assist.
Just over one minute later the Kings took a two goal advantage, with a goal scored by James Shepherd at 1:48. Assists were awarded to Brandon Hill and Jason Shmyr.
Lakeland had the last laugh in the first, with a goal by James Tallman at 2:30 with assists by Craig Anderson and Al Anderson.
Fairview proved their offense is top notch by following up with five goals in the third period.
The first goal was scored unassisted at 1:22 on the power play by Shepherd.
Dave Austin followed suit scoring on Lakeland’s starting goalie Cannon Cunningham at 8:04 of the second. His goal was assisted by Shepherd.
Brandon Hill scored his first of the game at 13:37. The even strength marker was assisted by Dustin Honing and Lassiter Johnson.
Honing put another nail in Lakeland’s coffin at 16:15 with an even strength goal. The goal was assisted by Hill and Lance Schultz.
Fairview’s final goal of the game came at 16:58 by Darryl Peterson, assisted by Dustin Craig and Johnson.
Lakeland attempted a comeback at 5:17 of the third period, scoring even strength. The goal was tallied by Jay Anderson, with assists to Dave Lamouche and Tallman.
Fairview capitalized on one of six power play opportunities in the game, while Lakeland was shut out on four chances.
Fairview goalie Scott Frayn was awarded the win.
Game winning goal was scored by James Shepherd. He scored two goals in the game and had a total of three points.
As of last Friday, the three top teams in the East Division had solidified their spots in the standings. Lakeland had no games left to play, but had earned their spot at the top of the division last month. Falher still had one game left to play against High Prairie, but they had also secured their second place spot in the East.
Fairview, after their win against the Eagles, earned a playoff spot in the East. The final two teams had not determined their spot in the East.
Hence, the Pirates will either be playing Fairview or Peace River. Lakeland could be matched up against Peace River, High Prairie, or Fairview.
