The Smoky Regional Childcare Society has officially announced they will be opening their doors to children on Aug. 16, 2010.
After over a year of surveys, applications of grants, and hard work by a large group of individuals, the facility will be open this fall.
“We’re so happy to have an official opening date set,” says FCSS director Penny Fox, who was instrumental in organizing the initial phases of the daycare project. “The Smoky Regional Childcare Society has set Aug. 16 as the date to allow parents to try the facility part-time before having their child attend the daycare full time in the fall.”
Fox says the group was overjoyed to hear they would be receiving a grant from the provincial government for over $30,000. She says the money will go a long way to ensure the building is prepared for the children come August.
The grant is part of the Making Spaces Grant available through the government. The childcare society will be using the $36,000 for repairs and upgrades for the facility. The grant will allow the society to purchase furnishings, materials and supplies needed to set up the space.
All operation costs for the daycare will be covered by registration fees paid by parents of the children in the daycare.
Parents who were questioned in a survey last year were willing to pay an estimated monthly fee of $600 to $650 for daycare services, and would put their children in daycare for more than a year.
“We have space for 22 kids,” says Smoky River Childcare Society President Tina Fournier. “Children from ages 19 months to five years, or until they begin school will be eligible for the care.”
“We have a young, very committed group of young ladies in the society who have really pushed the daycare to becoming reality,” says Fox. “They have organized sub-committees that will look after each element of the daycare to ensure it runs smoothly.”
High Prairie School Division offered a spot to the society last year in the playschool building located southeast of Routhier School in Falher.
Fox explains there is still a mountain of paperwork for the ladies to go through before the grand opening in Aug.
She explains the society will be looking for four full-time employees and one part-time casual employee to help run the daycare. The daycare must have one childcare supervisor and three child development assistants.
