Athletes from across Alberta will be gathering in July 2010 to participate in the 2010 Alberta Summer Games, and the sponsorship committee is currently seeking donations from individuals in the Peace Region.

The games organizers have been steadily accepting donations to make the event successful.

The most recent donations were received from Daishowa Marubeni International Peace River Pulp Division as Silver sponsor of the games with a total of $8000 value donation.

In addition, Peace Country Co-op has been added as a GOLD sponsor providing $10,000 in support.

Invision Chartered Accountants partners have become a Silver Sponsor.

The Summer Games were pleased to announce ATB as an official SILVER sponsor donating $8,000.

The Games are set to take place from July 19 to 25, 2010 and will feature fifteen sports that will be played at various venues throughout the region. Approximately 3,000 athletes between the ages of 12 and 17 will be representing eight zones from across Alberta.

Communities across the Peace Region will be hosting games in their home towns, the games will be held in towns from Falher to Manning.

Opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the Peace River Agricultural Society grounds.

Manning will be hosting softball, Berwyn will be hosting rugby, and Grimshaw will be hosting baseball.

Peace River and Grimshaw will be handling all swimming and water polo events between their two pools.

“That’s a new thing for us, because I don’t think there’s a lot of water polo in the area,” Games organizer Letitia Dempster says.

The Games will also be using the Peace River itself as one of the venues.

“One of the interesting sports is an actual kayak competition,” says Dempster.

“The athletes will be racing along a slalom course on the river. There is also kayak water polo going to be going on there.”

Other sports events at the Games will include everything from basketball to mountain biking. Falher will be hosting in-line hockey at the recreation complex.

All donations for the event will accepted by mail. Cheques can be made payable to the 2010 Alberta Summer Games, PO Box 7260, Peace River, T8S 1S9.

Cheques and cash can also be dropped off at the games office Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The games office is located North of Peace River High School in the Phimester building.

For more information, visit the games website at 2010albertasummergames.ca or call games manager Letitia Dempster at 780-618-1574.

Volunteers will also be required to make the games a great experience for all the athletes, fans and family members. If you would like to volunteer, please phone Letitia at the number listed above.
