Girouxville Sports Club will be holding a Spring Fling this Saturday as a fundraiser for the bowling alley being built later this summer.

The event will consist of a barbeque steak supper and silent and live auctions, all to be held on April 17. Cocktails will start at 5 p.m., with supper served at 6 p.m. The fundraiser will be held at the Centre Chevaliers on Main Street in Falher.

“If you want a table of eight you should book early,” says Girouxville Sports Club president Denis Boisvert.

The club has already sold out 300 tickets for the supper portion of the evening, but Village of Girouxville CAO Estelle Girard says there will be tickets available for the silent auction beginning at 7:30 p.m.

For more information about the event phone Doreen Dumont at 780-323-3028, Denis at 780-837-4037 or the Village of Girouxville office at 780-323-4270.

Structure and plans

Smoky Lanes Bowling Alley is quickly becoming reality in the Village of Girouxville.

The proposed bowling alley may be built and ready for customers as early as this fall.

In December 2008, Girouxville Sports Club and the Village of Girouxville presented the region with an idea to build the bowling alley.

The idea for a bowling alley was spawned from reduced numbers of curlers at the local curling rink.

The bowling alley will consist of a four-lane, five-pin facility with a kitchen and lounge area.

The committees stress the innovative sports facility will provide an activity for young children, adolescents, middle age people, individuals with disabilities, and adults can enjoy for limited cost.

Organizers hopes are if the bowling alley is built, people will use the facility for group parties, birthdays, and holiday parties.

Currently, the nearest bowling alleys are located in Enilda, Valleyview, Fairview, and Grande Prairie.

“We just heard the blue prints for the kitchen have been approved,” says Boisvert. “We’ll be going to tender in March.”

He explains much of the preliminary work has been completed, this includes environmental studies, soil samples, fundraisers, and ironing out any legality issues that may arise.

The group held a casino night at the end of January 2010 to raise funds for the alley. Boisvert says to keep your eyes and ears open for more fundraisers that are to follow in the near future.

Boisvert explains the construction of the bowling alley will commence either in May or June depending on the weather.

“I remember older people in the community talking about 50 years ago when the curling rink was built not thinking it would ever succeed,” says Boisvert.

“Well 50 years later we’re opening a bowling alley. Be a part of making history.”

Denis Boisvert and Carmen Ewing

Last summer the Girouxville Sports Club president Denis Boisvert and Girouxville mayor Carmen Ewing proudly displayed the billboard resting on the future location of the bowling alley.
