A happy message from FCSS (Family and Community Support Services) event coordinator Jean Moore, Ol’ Tyme Family Nite is still going strong three years after its commencement.
“We want to remind everyone that the family night is still alive and well,” says Moore, who explains the Ol’ Tyme Family Nite is now held at the Elks Hall every Friday night beginning at 7:30 p.m. The last Friday of the month the event begins at 6:30 p.m., as there is also a pot luck supper served.
Moore says she has had to take a less active role at this year’s Ol’ Tyme Family Nite events because the lead musicians are taking care of the programming.
“We have very dedicated individuals who lend their musical talent each week,” she says. “We have a great group of volunteers who also help with set up of the hall, preparing snacks and organizing the event each week.”
FCSS has been running the Ol’ Tyme Family Nite for three years. However; now the Royal Purple from McLennan sponsors the first Friday of the month.
“We want to emphasize that the program is paid by donation only for three weeks each month,” says Moore. “We invite all walks of life; seniors, children, adults, everyone to come dance and have a good night each Friday.”
Ol’ Tyme Family Nite has brought entertainment opportunities to many people throughout the region over the last three years.
To celebrate the second anniversary of Ol’ Tyme Family Nite, FCSS brought in country recording artist Duane Steele last January. The musician is originally from a Hines Creek, and Moore explains he had a great time playing in McLennan. She says in the future they would like to have other professional musicians play at Ol’ Tyme Family Nites.
She says the program has gone through multiple changes over the past three years, and FCSS is willing to take into consideration ideas from individuals in the area to make the evening even more successful.
“Like everything else in life there are growing pains,” says Moore. “We would like individuals in the area to give us some ideas about what they would like to see each Friday. If they have ideas of what they would like to see, we urge them to phone us at the FCSS office.”
Moore and FCSS director Penny Fox say that in a public meeting last December, 95 per cent of people questioned said they like what is happening at Ol’ Tyme Family Nite and are not interested in seeing change.
If you are interested in experiencing Ol’ Tyme Family Nite, it is held every Friday at the Elks Hall in McLennan.
If you have some new ideas for the evening or have questions, call Jean at 780-837-2220.
