Volunteer firefighters required for region

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer fire fighter, now is your chance.
New fire chief Cindy Conroy explains Smoky River Fire and Rescue is currently looking to add fire fighters to the McLennan, Donnelly and Falher stations, and the sooner the better.
Conroy explains the fire department has been active in firefighting already this year, and more volunteers are needed to man various situations throughout the region.
“We need as many people as possible,” says Conroy. “They need to live within the municipal district, including in Falher, McLennan, and Donnelly (where the firehouses are).”
Conroy explains right now they have an incredible shortage within the department.
“There is a job for everybody,” explains Conroy. “We don’t expect people to go into situations where they’ll be uncomfortable. We need people to run supplies, conduct traffic control, and various other positions within the department.”
There are currently people from every profession volunteering with the fire stations in the region. There are people in the oil industry, teachers, mayors, to name a few.
Conroy explains she would like to start a committee of people to help the department when they are out at calls.
“There are some situations where we’ll be out at a call for multiple hours,” she explains. “We would like to have someone bring out food and beverages while we are busy at a call.”
She says this committee could assemble to cook and deliver the food, when needed.
Volunteer firefighters must be at least 18 years of age. All training is provided and funded by the M.D. of Smoky River. Many firefighters who began in regional firehouses eventually have become professional firefighters in cities, or have taken on paramedic roles with additional training.
The firefighters practice every second and fourth Wednesday of the month.
“We would welcome interested individuals at our practices so they can see what we do,” says Conroy. “Feel free to drop by to see what the volunteers jobs are.”
Conroy says she is hoping to start the Junior Firefighter program up again this fall as well. Her goal is to have youth and adults join to make the department stronger.
