SRE Sports: Smoky River Regional Golf Course open for business

Anxious golfers in the Smoky River region are officially back in the swing of things following a long, cold winter.

"We're open for business," says Smoky River Regional Golf Course Society president Odessa Ptashnyk.

The challenging McLennan-based nine-hole golf course opened for the season May 4 on permanent grass greens.

"My understanding from our greenskeeper (Doug Chalifoux), the greens are in nice shape, especially considering the time of year," says Ptashnyk.

Hours of operation at the golf course for the months of May and June are from noon to dusk and 10 a.m. to dusk during the months of July and August.

Both ladies and men's night events kicked off last week with the women teeing off for the first time this season on May 9, while the men hit the links on May 10.

Residents interested in participating in either of the weekly events, which start at 6 p.m., are encouraged to simply drop by the golf course.

Ptashnyk says green fees for men's and ladies night events have been significantly reduced from the regular fee of $15 to $6 per person. It's an effort to attract additional golfing traffic to the course. Golfers wishing to purchase memberships for the season have several affordable options to consider.

They range from adult memberships at $250, couples for $400, family memberships for $500 and senior memberships for $225. Junior memberships, which are youth and students up to 21 years of age, sell for $100.

Residents using the local golf course in McLennan also have the option of purchasing six-pack cards, for six rounds of golf, at the price of $70. Green fees for nine holes of play are $15, while power cart rentals are $20 for nine holes of play or $25 for 18 holes. Memberships are available at the town office and at Bakery Treats & Movie Needs. Use of the course for tournaments is subject to a fee of $350 per day, in addition to a $350 deposit, which includes a 10-day notice to cancel or postpone events.

The first tournament of the year takes place on the weekend of July 28-29.

Anyone interested is asked to register at the clubhouse.
