Up Front: Take a break for Victoria Day!
Emily Plihal
for Smoky River Express
Victoria Day is fast approaching and for those of you fortunate enough to do so, take a long and deserving break.
Life’s stresses can be too much sometimes, and we all need a little time to unwind.
I for one will be hunting through the wilderness in my first week off in five years. I plan on napping, rejuvenating and taking some much needed ME time. Oh, I suppose I’ll be trying to get my hunters a bear or two too.
Spend some time with your family and remember what makes our lives so unique and special. Life is too darned short to always be working your tail off. It is crucial to have a break to enjoy some of life’s finer things.
Fish, camp, exercise, sleep... Do whatever makes your heart happy.
Often times as adults we neglect to take care of ourselves, leading to major emotional breakdowns.
In order to have a calm, sane mind... take some time for yourself.
Please, just remember not to drink and drive!
Be cautious of dry conditions
Just a friendly reminder to all of you who may be camping this holiday weekend, please remember to use caution when out in the bush this summer.
With a limited amount of precipitation the last few years, it is incredibly dry! Please check to make sure there is not a fire ban wherever you are camping. Even if there is no fire ban, keep a close eye on your fire and make sure safety is your top concern.
A unique recipe idea
Beef Marinade I– taken from allrecipes.com
- 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
- 3/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup white wine vinegar
- 1/3 cup lemon juice
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons ground dry mustard
- 2 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
- 1 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
- 2 tablespoons ground cloves
Directions
1. In a quart jar, combine oil, soy sauce, vinegar, lemon juice and Worcestershire sauce. Season with mustard, salt, pepper, parsley and ground cloves. Shake well until it is mixed.
2. Put meat in a large bowl. Pour marinade over meat and let stand covered 3 days in refrigerator, basting every day.
Have a wonderful long weekend. Be sure to be safe, happy, and considerate of others.
Honey Festival
Kudos are required for Jessica Simard and Lori Chalifoux.
Jessica, who was last year’s Honey Festival organizer, and Lori, the assistant organizer, are back again for the 2010 version of the festival.
I look forward to seeing the great team’s efforts pay off for them. The two women have a great zest for life. Their personalities and ambition are what made last year’s festival such a huge success.
Thank you ladies for doing such an amazing job. I doubt you’re told enough that your efforts are truly appreciated. I can’t wait to see what you’ll do this year.
The Honey Festival will be held on June 18 and 19 in Falher.
The festival will be one of the many events occurring this summer.
The others, most notably, include Guy’s Farmers’ Day, the demolition derby, and the 75th Anniversary of Jean Cote.
What an exciting summer it will be!
